Court to rule on Edgar Lungu burial

BLOEMFONTEIN - It's been over a year since Zambian President Edgar Lungu died, and he has still not been buried.

His final resting place has been the subject of a legal battle between the government and his family.

A decision on his burial site is expected to be made on Tuesday.

The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein is expected to deliver judgment on the matter.

The Lungu family is appealing a High Court ruling that allowed the Zambian government to repatriate his body.

The legal standoff has kept the former leader's body in South African mortuaries since his death in June 2025. His family argues it was the late President’s wish to be buried in South Africa.

But the Zambian Government wants to afford him a state funeral.
