CPUT students sleeping outside campus

CAPE TOWN - Cape Peninsula University of Technology Tertiary has been facing a deepening student housing crisis.

Some students have spent days sleeping outside campus due to accommodation shortages.

Frustrated students said poor leadership and planning is to blame.

On Monday, the Tertiary institution had temporarily housed 400 students, including those who had been camping outside its District Six campus, despite exceeding capacity.

By Tuesday morning, more students with pending applications had shown up, hoping for shelter.

University officials say much of the panic stems from students who didn’t apply for accommodation in advance, returned early, or are appealing.

Still, the university is working to help where possible.

In the meantime, some student activists are pleading with the institution to fast-track all processes and help those in need.
