JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni said it is stepping up efforts to ensure accountability in the metro following the arrest of four current and former municipal officials linked to the Madlanga Commission's Recommended Task Team investigation.
EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi, former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi, suspended City of Ekurhuleni legal services head, Kemi Behari and suspended head of Human Resources Linda Gxasheka were arrested overnight. They are appearing in court on Thursday.
The DA maintains that the City of Ekurhuleni has for too long prioritised protecting individuals over safeguarding the integrity of the municipality.
DA Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate Khathutshelo Rasilingwane said the party will write to the Speaker after the court proceedings to request urgent action against the officials implicated. She argues that the metro lacks decisive leadership willing to hold individuals accountable.
Rasilingwane said the DA has consistently acted against allegations of corruption and is prepared to publicly oppose those accused of stealing from the city.
She also questioned the absence of other political parties at the court, saying accountability should remain a priority for all public representatives.
She added that the DA's next steps will depend on the outcome of the court appearance.
Rasilingwane said the party will also continue pursuing action against the current city manager, noting that it has already written to Gauteng COGTA MEC Jacob Mamabolo and is still awaiting a response.
She said the DA remains committed to ensuring that people with questionable conduct are not allowed to remain in positions of authority within the municipality.
