DA questions transparency of geographical name changes

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance is demanding transparency around the process of changes in geographical names.

This comes as the party claims that the public participation process was flawed and that people's voices were not heard.

The Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, confirmed 21 geographical name changes and name registrations from the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal following recommendations from the South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC).

According to the government these approvals reflect the Department’s commitment to transforming South Africa’s naming landscape while also promoting social cohesion.

But already this decision evoked strong emotion.

DA member of Parliament Samantha Graham-Maré argues that they have objected at every single step of the process, but despite these plans have gone ahead.
