DA wants detailed crime data on violence against women, children

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling on acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia to ensure the next crime statistics report includes accurate, disaggregated data on crimes committed against women and children.

The call comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced plans to strengthen the government’s response to gender-based violence and femicide, including addressing forensic backlogs and identifying the resources needed to tackle the crisis.

The DA says gaps and inaccuracies in crime data make it difficult to determine the true scale of violence against women and children, and to assess whether resources are being allocated effectively.

The party says detailed and reliable statistics are needed to identify trends, understand the extent of the problem and ensure resources are directed to areas of greatest need.

The DA has written to Cachalia, calling on him to commit to a specific date by which corrected and disaggregated crime data will be made publicly available.
