Date for local government elections yet to be announced

JOHANNESBURG - The date for the local government elections is yet to be announced.

It will be done after consultations with Cooperative Governance Minister, Velenkosini Hlabisa.

But, the IEC says it's ready to run credible elections.

It says it's on schedule with ballot papers, registration systems and training of staff.

Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Sheburi said consultations between the IEC and minister have commenced.

"We're hoping that soon the date will be made known," he said.

He said an election must be held between 2 November 2026 and no later than the end of January 2027.

"The responsibility to set and determine the actual date rests with the minister."

Sheburi said there are a number of dependencies ahead of each municipal election.

"In January, we will commence our training in readiness for the registration weekends that will be held sometime between June and August this year," he said.

"Similarly, we are expanding our staff cohort to compliment permant staff cohort with expansion recruitment."
