DIRCO to brief Parliament on R1.4bn owed by foreign countries

CAPE TOWN - The Standing Committee on Appropriations will receive a briefing from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation DIRCO, on plans to recoup R1.4 billion owed by foreign countries.

The committee will also get an update on progress made in the repatriation of funds owed to SAA by Zimbabwe.

The department will reveal plans to strengthen South Africa`s sovereignty at a global level.

The state racked up a bill of almost R300-million to repatriate foreign nationals to their home countries in the past few months.

Home Affairs has already written to some countries, including Malawi, Nigeria, and Ethiopia,
requesting reimbursement.
