Dreams of united self-determined Africa reignited

JOHANNESBURG - It's Africa Day, marking 63 years since the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now the African Union.

Across the continent, people are reflecting on unity, integration and development.

But in South Africa, it comes as thousands protest against migration.

They claim migrants are placing a burden on public services, including healthcare and education.

Ugly scenes have played out with foreign businesses closed and people blocked from receiving services.

In Durban, hundreds of refugees opted to camp out in the city centre, pleading for protection.

Government has slammed vigilante action and promised to step up law enforcement.

It will host the main event in Moruleng in the North West.

But there are reports that the Africa Ambassadorial Core will not attend, as they fear for their safety.
