DURBAN - The Political Killings Task Team is probing the murder of a KwaMashu activist.
Siphiwe Thusini, an MK Party member and anti-illegal immigration activist, was shot dead outside his home on Friday.
He was well-known for his anti-illegal immigration campaign in KwaMashu.
Over the past week, he and fellow community members were seen driving out foreign shop owners.
But on Friday evening, he was ambushed while returning to his K-section home from a political engagement.
Gunmen opened fire at close range, killing him beside his car.
His son Ayanda was among those who rushed to the scene.
"When I got there and I called him, he wasn't even responding," Ayanda told eNCA.
"I called him more than ten times. He didn't respond. He was just lying there. And I was so hurt because that's unlike him. Whenever I call him, he's going to be there. That's for sure. He never makes a mistake."
Thusini's brother, Thabani, says Siphiwe was worried about his safety and had raised concerns about being followed.
Sources close to the investigation have told eNCA that preliminary information suggests the “protection fee” mafia may have killed Thusini.
Thusini's family is now demanding quick justice as they prepare to lay him to rest next week.
No arrests have been made, and police say they are working towards establishing the motive.
