DUT students demand on-campus accommodation as academic year begins

DURBAN - Students are demanding on-campus accommodation at Durban University of Technology (DUT) as the academic year begins.

On Monday, students formed long queues at the institution, some hoping to secure campus housing, while others were trying to confirm their registration.

Many, some accompanied by parents, said they had been placed on waiting lists and were hoping for acceptance.

Others said they had been accepted and registered but were still unable to find accommodation.

At Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), students spent days sleeping outside campus last week due to accommodation shortages.

Frustrated students are blaming poor leadership and planning for the situation.

Meanwhile, the Higher Education Department has been monitoring universities and TVET colleges for the 2026 academic year.

Deputy Minister Nomusa Dube-Ncube said the rollout is proceeding as planned, with all systems ready at the country’s institutions.
