Eastern Cape official faces academic fraud charges

EAST LONDON - An Eastern Cape government official accused of academic fraud returns to the East London Magistrate's court.

Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of allegedly falsifying a Matric certificate.

The court dismissed his application for discharge under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act.

The defence is expected to call its first witness, and proceedings will continue tomorrow.

Kupelo is among several Eastern Cape government officials implicated in academic fraud.
