UMTHATHA - A 75-year-old woman has been killed at a village in Engcobo after being accused of witchcraft.
Police say her own family members took her to a nearby stream where she was murdered.
She was assaulted with a plank and drowned.
Her naked body was found near the stream with bruises to the head and face and strangulation marks on the neck.
The suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made yet as police probe a murder case.
A viral video capturing the disturbing incident has sparked outrage.
Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta has strongly condemned the killing.
She says this tragedy is part of a growing crisis in the Alfred Nzo Region, where four women have been killed in May alone.
Fanta is urging communities to reject witchcraft-related stigma and protect women and vulnerable groups from violence.
