KWANOBUHLE - Matric pupils at Phaphani Senior Secondary School in Kwanobuhle, Eastern Cape, are traumatised after six armed men stormed a school governing body meeting.
They assaulted the treasurer and forced the principal to transfer an undisclosed sum of the school funds to a specified bank account.
The incident has prompted the local taxi association to step in and provide security at area schools amid police resource shortages.
Lenox Ngwenya, Phaphani Secondary School SGB member, said it’s distressing that the robbery happened during a matric study camp, with some pupils witnessing the incident.
The Uitenhage Taxi Association says it’s coincidental that news of the robbery broke as they were meeting with police to discuss joint efforts to fight crime in the area.
Taxi operators quickly deployed drivers to all Kwanobuhle schools to provide security until the end of exams.
Police are investigating cases of robbery and carjacking.
