JOHANNESBURG - Police and other law enforcement agencies across the country say their no-nonsense approach during the festive season has led to plenty of arrests.
More than 16,000 suspects were nabbed nationwide during Shanela II operations between 29 December and 4 January.

The Eastern Cape saw its worst drink driving violations in decades, with over 1,200 arrests,
But authorities believe their zero-tolerance approach has saved lives.
Meanwhile the Central Drug Authority says the spike in drunk drivers highlights South Africans’ troubled relationship with alcohol.

As some holidaymakers head home, others say it may be safer to avoid festive season travel altogether in the future.
