Ekurhuleni appoints acting MM amid Kagiso Lerutla arrest

PRETORIA – Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has appointed Tsholofelo Koopedi as acting city manager.

This follows the arrest of the metro’s city manager Kagiso Lerutla at the weekend.

Koopedi is the City's head of department for strategy and corporate planning.

Lerutla was arrested on Sunday at OR Tambo International Airport.

He is due to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday alongside suspended acting EMPD chief Julius Mkhwanazi. 

The 40-year-old faces will face charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.  

It forms part of a widening crackdown linked to evidence emerging from the Madlanga Commission.

Xhakaza says Koopedi will have full powers to run the administration.
