DURBAN - The driver of an eThekwini Municipality water tanker that fatally struck Adams Mission resident Celani Zungu has been suspended.
The Durban municipality has launched an investigation into the incident.
Zungu's death cast a shadow over a government oversight visit on Monday to inspect water infrastructure projects across eThekwini.
During the visit, officials faced questions about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The municipality confirmed that the driver of the tanker, which crushed the 38-year-old, has been placed on suspension while both internal and police investigations continue.

eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba said the driver had been suspended because the incident had left him traumatised, and to allow investigations to proceed without interference.
"We have placed our employee on suspension because the incident has traumatised him. The suspension will also allow investigations to continue without interference. Once all the information has been gathered, we will provide an update. For now, we appeal for calm as the investigations continue."
It is understood the municipal worker was driving away after a confrontation with community members. At this stage, it remains unclear whether he saw Zungu before the collision.
