JOHANNESBURG - Authorities have intercepted a smuggling attempt of a large amount of explosives at the Beitbridge Port of Entry.
The discovery was made during an inspection of a truck by border officials.
R1-million worth of mining explosives and detonators were hidden in a concealed compartment inside a trailer.

According to Border Management Authority spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi, mining explosives and detonator fuses could have been used for illegal mining and cash-in-transit heists.
“It’s a good thing that we intercepted them because we are preventing these illegal things from happening,” she said.
The driver attempted to flee the scene before being arrested.
The SAPS are investigating where the explosives came from and where they were going.
