Families forced out as sewage floods Makhaza homes

CAPE TOWN - Residents in Makhaza, Cape Town, were forced to evacuate after a pipeline burst flooded their shacks.

The City of Cape Town says the structures are built on top of sewer lines, making it difficult to maintain the pipeline.

The city, however, says it's looking into appointing a contractor.

Two months ago, 300 families were left displaced after the Zandvlei wastewater treatment pipe collapsed during maintenance work.

Sewage has been gushing out of manholes due to a pipeline that has not yet been repaired.

Waste now flows to Khalipha Street, affecting more than 20 houses.

Those who’ve been forced to abandon their homes are making arrangements.

No community halls will be opened to accommodate them.

Despite the city deploying two mobile pumps on Sunday to drain the sewer, the area remains flooded.

The city warns that, due to limited space as a result of illegal land invasion, relocating the families off the sewer line may take time.
