JOHANNESBURG - Concerns are growing about flavourings in baby food.
A study carried out by the University of Stellenbosch shows that many products breach the country's labelling laws and mislead consumers.
Now there's call to tighten the regulations.
The research also shows that 85 percent of baby food is produced in South Africa.
Additionally, many products breached national labelling laws and therefore mislead consumers.
Food scientist Wilana Barnard said there are many concerns about these flavourings.
"There are a lot of laws and regulations relating to baby foods, but they aren’t always clear," she said.
"Structures need to be put in place to make sure regulations and laws are complied with, and need to be monitored. There needs to be consequences if they do not comply.”
