BHISHO, Eastern Cape - The High Court in Bhisho has ruled that the trial of eight suspects arrested for the murder and attempted murder of University of Fort Hare staff members will not be broadcast due to safety concerns.
Seven men and a woman face murder charges for the killing of Vice-Chancellor Sakhile Buhlungu's bodyguard, Mboneli Vessele.
The trial of the eight accused has been split into two: one looks into the murder of Fort Hare's former fleet manager, Petrus Roets, who was shot and killed outside his home in May 2022, while the other looks into the Vessele's killing.
The trial resumes next week.
eNCA's Ronald Masinda reports that the court says the safety of witnesses could be compromised if they appeared on camera.
