Food safety | Calls for vigilance after pupil's death

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Education says it's doing all it can to ensure school pupils consume snacks that are from authorised and trusted food outlets.

This comes as the Orange Farm community mourns a Grade 10 pupil who died after allegedly consuming food from a spaza shop near her home.

The department is pleading with parents and the community to play their part in keeping children safe.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said parents should be vigilant.

"There is an element of danger when coming to the snacks," he said.

Meanwhile, Zanele Mathebula's family said they want justice.
