Food safety | Consumer Commission cracks down on suppliers

JOHANNESBURG - The National Consumer Commission has issued notices to 37 suppliers in Mpumalanga after inspections uncovered serious violations of the Consumer Protection Act.

Between February and June, inspectors found food suppliers selling expired, dented, and damaged products.

Acting Consumer Commissioner, Hardin Ratshisusu, said there were a number of visits to a number of retailers and notices were issued to comply

"If we issue a compliance notice, the retailer may be able to fix what needs to be fixed," he said.

Ratshisusu said the commission is concerned about visits to informal traders.

"We are picking up these concerns, especially the sale of expired food."
