The University of Fort Hare has suspended its vice-chancellor Professor Sakhela Buhlungu.
A forensic investigation found irregular appointments at executive level.
The university says the suspension is an interim step pending disciplinary proceedings and does not amount to a finding of guilt.
The investigation found that four members of senior management including Buhlungu, allegedly failed to follow proper governance procedures in the appointment of two executive directors.
