Fuel Levy Relief Extended

JOHANNESBURG - Government is set to extend the fuel levy relief for at least another month and provide even more relief for Diesel users.

In April Treasury announced a R3 reduction in fuel levies to cushion the blow of a significant fuel price hike.

The Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, has now proposed that this reduction be extended until 2 June.

In addition, he proposes increasing the relief for diesel by 93 cents to R3.93 per litre.

This is set to come into effect when prices change again on 6 May.

According to the latest price data, petrol will increase by between R1.76 and R2.08 a litre.

Diesel is set to climb by approximately R4.50.

Without the fuel levy relief, the price hike would have been over R8 a litre for diesel users.

The bad news is that Godongwana proposes that the relief is halved in June and then phased out in July.

That means that if the global oil price stays over $100 a barrel, motorists will be in for more shocks in the coming months.
