Funeral parlours warn of space shortage in Joburg

JOHANNESBURG - There is a critical shortage of burial space in Johannesburg, that is according to the warning from the South African Funeral Practitioners Association.

South Africa’s economic hub attracts local and international migrants, all seeking a better life.

Now funeral parlours are blaming government for failing to keep up, leaving little to no space to bury the dead.

A staggering 90 percent of Johannesburg cemeteries are already full, and out of the city’s 42 cemeteries, only four still have space for new burials.

eNCA's Naomi Kobbie reports that the City of Joburg claims it has enough burial space for the next 40 years, but it's a completely different story on the ground, where residents struggle to bury their loved ones.
