Gamtoos Valley residents in Eastern Cape urged to evacuate

GQEBERHA - Gamtoos Valley residents in the Eastern Cape have been urged to evacuate to safety as the Kouga Dam has exceeded its full capacity.

The dam is currently at 113 percent, resulting in a serious flood risk to surrounding communities. Residents of Kingsway Village, Big Fish, Gamtoos Mouth Resort, Ferry Hotel and all low-lying areas in the Gamtoos Valley have been asked to evacuate.

Evacuation shelters have been opened at Katrina Felix Hall in Thornhill and the Loerie community hall.

Agricultural farmers have also been advised to relocate livestock, farming equipment, machinery, and vehicles to safer areas to avoid severe flood damage.

“Please avoid all river crossings and flooded roads. Emergency teams remain on high alert and residents are requested to cooperate with all evacuation instructions,” said Kouga Municipality in a statement.
