CAPE TOWN - More than a thousand people were killed in the Western Cape between July and September.
The majority of them were victims of gang violence.
Turf wars and power struggles fuel the rising violence.
But provincial authorities hold out hope that they will win the war against gangs.
Last year, the province recorded a 0.9 percent increase in murders for the second quarter of the year.
That was 10 more people killed than in the same period in 2023.
This year, 97 more people were killed between July and September.
Provincial authorities say the Western Cape is showing an alarming rise in murders fuelled by gang warfare.
In Cape Town alone, 286 people were killed by gangs.
Community safety authorities say this is unacceptable.
Meanwhile, Capetonians offered ideas on what should be done to make their city safer.
The gang violence has even reached court precincts, where several people have been gunned down, including in the Athlone Magistrates Court.
The National Prosecuting Authority is now considering limiting physical court appearances for accused to curb this growing scourge.
