Gauteng still one of most dangerous provinces in SA

JOHANNESBURG - Crime has fallen in Gauteng, but kidnappings remain a concern.

The province remains one of the most lawless in the country.

But Gauteng SAPS believe they have the situation under control.

"The overall crime committee reported serious crimes have seen a decrease by 5.2%. Gauteng accounts to 26% of the country’s community crime. Both murder and attempted murder we have seen a decrease by 15% and 3.2% respectfully," said Tommy Mthombeni, Gauteng Police Commissioner.

Gauteng has identified a potential risk come end of June, given the pending anti-migrant deadline and the threat of more protests. But the police say they ready for any eventuality.

Mark Joseph, Gauteng Vispol head said the 30 June deadline has raised concerns for national logistics and fleet operations.

"Groups such as All Truck Drivers Forum in Allied South Africa, ATDF ASA, have indicated their intent to align with the action threatening the target major transport routes such as the N1, the N3, the N4, and N12 highways."

While a number of top cops have also been suspended or arrested as the Madlanga Commission continue, police say the recent numbers don’t show this impacting the performance of the SAPS.

Residents of Gauteng told eNCA they still feel unsafe, and called for SAPS in the province to do all it can to continue bringing down the numbers in all crimes.
