George building collapse | Construction protocols flouted before tragedy

GEORGE - Shoddy workmanship and substandard building supplies are part of a long list of construction violations behind the collapse of a George apartment complex.

A total of 34 people died and 28 others were injured when the five-storey Victoria Street building caved in in May last year.

The Council for the Built Environment, Public Works Department and the Engineering Council of South Africa presented the outcomes of an investigation into the disaster.

The report, dubbed the 'Anatomy of a failed system', gives a time-lined account of red flags ahead of the construction site's collapse.

Four structural engineers, one architect and a forensic investigative lawyer conducted the probe to determine what caused the disaster.

Officials say an Employment and Labour Department report is still outstanding.
