JOHANNESBURG - Social Development Minister Dina Pule said police are working to track down those behind the Ekurhuleni murders.
She was speaking at the funeral of runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo.
The 38-year-old was found dead days after disappearing while jogging.
She is among nine women found murdered in Ekurhuleni.
Pule is calling on communities, traditional and religious leaders to work with government to end gender-based violence.
"Gender-based violence and femicide are not the responsibility of government alone, and I must say this. It's not the responsibility of government alone. And I want to thank the young woman who is standing here, representing the runners, who said, we are here, we are waiting for your government to talk to us.
“Because this is not time to blame each other. This is time to come together with our own government, to give proposals of how you see this thing, and how you see government doing this thing, and how do we stop these killings. It cannot be the responsibility of government alone, and it cannot be the responsibility of women alone.
“It is the responsibility of government. It is the responsibility of Makhosi. It is the responsibility of Abafundisi.
It is the responsibility of young women and young men. It is the responsibility of all of you.
Pule said government shares the community’s pain and will get another briefing from senior police officials on investigations.
"Today at two o'clock when we leave here, we are again going to meet with the police and the generals are going to brief us on the work that they are doing, that they have done for the entire week and at two o'clock again we will address the nation.
“I want to assure you that we feel what you feel as government. We may not seem like because we are very far from you probably when you see us at a distance, but we are here today and want to assure you that we're working day and night to try and catch the psychopath,” she said.
