Govt confirms free vaccinations for all farmers

JOHANNESBURG - Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has confirmed that government will cover the full cost of vaccinating the national herd against foot-and-mouth disease.

He says farmers will not have to pay a cent.

Vaccine stocks have been distributed nationwide, and the vaccination drive is under way.

Thousands of cattle are being vaccinated each week, with a target of reaching 80 percent of the national herd by December.

One million doses from Biogenesis Bago have arrived, with another 1,5 million Dollvet doses in storage and more shipments expected in the coming weeks.

Steenhuisen has dismissed rumours that farmers would be charged R45 per dose as untrue.
