Govt fully mobilised for Easter weekend

KRANSKOP – Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said law enforcement over the Eastern period has been intensified to ensure visibility day and night.

Speaking at the road safety campaign at the Kranskop Toll Plaza on the N1, Creecy said national traffic officers have been deployed in Limpopo and Gauteng to ensure visibility day and night.

“We are running three shifts. From 6am until 2pm, from 2pm until 10pm and from 10pm until 6am. The N1 route is going to be policed 24/7.”

In addition, the minister said there would be patrols on the N3, the N1 south of Johannesburg, the N4 and the N12.

“Special operations on these major routes include increased patrol density, continual speed monitoring and alcohol testing and coordinated deployments at toll plazas and known accident hotspots.”

Creecy said attention was being paid to scheduled and non-scheduled long-distance buses, minibuses and other vehicles carrying church congregants and other groups.

She called on road users to take responsibility and refrain from taking alcohol and drugs before driving.

“Speed kills. Please travel at the speed limit so that you and family arrive alive. Before you go on your journey, make sure your vehicle is roadworthy. Take regular breaks; many people are killed because they fall asleep at the wheel. Wear your seat belts and please, get your children to wear their seat belts,” Creecy emphasised.

“And lastly, be patient and considerate. It doesn’t matter if anyone goes in front of you; what matters is you arrive alive, and you will be with us this Easter and many Easters to come.”
