Police forensics at scene of child murder in Khayelitsha
CAPE TOWN - Police believe the suspects behind the Gugulethu mass shooting may have been known to their victims, as investigations into the deadly attack continue.
Five people were killed and another was injured after gunmen forced their way into a house during the early hours of the morning.
According to police, the assailants demanded a firearm before opening fire on the occupants.
Acting Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Luyanda Damoyi says the victims were four young men and one young woman. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects and victims may have been acquainted.
Damoyi says one of the deceased reportedly told the suspects he did not have the firearm they were looking for, prompting the attackers to open fire.
Police suspect everyone inside the house was shot to eliminate potential witnesses, although this remains part of the ongoing investigation.
Detectives are continuing to gather evidence and follow up on all available leads as they work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
