‘He was right in front of us’: Katlehong gunman hands himself over

KATLEHONG - A quiet Katlehong street turned into a scene of utter chaos on Tuesday evening when a gunman opened fire on a group of ANC members returning from a party member's memorial service at Mogobeng Primary School.

The shooting left two ANC members dead at the scene, and five injured. The toll has since risen to four after two injured victims later died in hospital. The three remaining survivors continue to receive medical treatment.

ANC member Nathi Ndabeni was in the middle of chanting political slogans when the gunfire suddenly erupted.

"At first we thought it was our comrades shooting in the air, only to realize later that the shooter was right in front of us," Ndabeni said.

"He didn't run away after the shooting. He even spoke to some of the members and then later disappeared. He left his vehicle behind. He is someone we know."

The suspect, who has since handed himself over to the police, is expected to appear before the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

It's believed that he is a former councillor and now a member of a well-known political party.
