Health ombud to release findings on KZN hospital staff deaths

JOHANNESBURG - The Health Ombud is expected to release the findings of probes into deaths of staff at KwaZulu-Natal public hospitals.

The deaths sparked national outrage about working conditions in the public health sector.

It was triggered by the death of medical intern Alulutho Mazwi at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital.

That was soon followed by Siyabonga Zulu of Ngwelezane Hospital, radiographer Mvelo Cele of Port Shepstone Hospital and Tumelo Kgaladi of Addington Hospital.

The deaths sparked widespread condemnation from unions and professional bodies.

They blamed chronic staff shortages, heavy workloads, burnout and hostile working environments.
