Heavy downpours, strong winds plunge parts of Eastern Cape in darkness

KUGOMPO CITY- Various areas in the Eastern Cape have been plunged into darkness after heavy downpours that have lashed through the province.

Areas affected include Alfred Nzo, O.R. Tambo, Amathole, Chris Hani District Municipalities and Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.

Eskom confirmed that it is attending to the widespread electricity supply interruptions.

“The adverse weather conditions have resulted in damage to electricity infrastructure, including damaged poles, broken conductors and other network components.

“In some areas, difficult road and weather conditions are also hampering access to affected infrastructure and slowing restoration efforts,” the power utility said in a statement.

Because of the extent of damage and the continued adverse weather conditions, Eskom said restoration times may vary from one area to another.

In the meantime, residents have been urged to exercise caution, including staying away from damaged or fallen electricity infrastructure.

“Customers in affected areas are urged to remain patient while Eskom teams continue with repairs.
Safety remains Eskom’s priority.”
