JOHANNESBURG - More than 50 homes have been destroyed and officials are still assessing the full extent of the damage following a fire in KwaZulu-Natal.
A massive fire tore through the Jika Joe informal settlement in Pietermaritzburg.
The blaze spread quickly through the settlement on Saturday afternoon.
Around 200 people have been displaced, with many families losing almost everything.
Firefighters, police and emergency teams rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control.
Residents also tried to save whatever they could as the flames moved through the settlement.
So far, authorities have not confirmed any deaths or injuries. And they're still trying to establish what started the fire.
Residents and motorists are being urged to stay away from the area and give emergency crews clear access.
