IEC captures more than 60% of voting results so far

MIDRAND - As of 5pm on Thursday, a total of 65 of the 213 municipalities across the country have completed the capturing, scanning, auditing and exception process.

These municipalities tracked exclude 44 district councils.

The figures were revealed by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), Mosotho Moepya, during a media briefing wherein he gave an update on the 2026 Local Government Elections counting, verification and results capturing.

Moepya said the counting and tallying of results are advancing steadily.

The same progress is also noted at a provincial level, with the results capture rate in the Northern Cape sitting at 87% followed by the Western Cape at 69%, then the Eastern Cape at 60% and the Free State at 64%.

Meanwhile, Mpumalanga has captured 52%, while KwaZulu-Natal is at 37%, North West and Gauteng are both at 35%, while Limpopo stands at 23%.

Moepya cautioned during the address that the figures remain provisional until the finalisation of objections material to an election.

He said the Commission anticipates that the results collation process will be concluded by the weekend.

“The Commission remains committed to finalising the results as expeditiously as possible, while ensuring that all prescribed verification and quality assurance processes are rigorously followed to safeguard the accuracy, transparency and integrity of the results.”
