IEC ramps up readiness ahead of 2026 local elections

JOHANNESBURG - South Africans are reminded not to stand in a queue to register to vote for the upcoming 2026 local elections.

This as the Electoral Commission (EC) has launched an online voter registration campaign.

IEC said the campaign went live this week across multiple media platforms allowing voters to register online, update their voter details, and verify their registration status.

According to the IEC, this is aimed at ramping up its readiness for the upcoming elections while also boosting participation.

The online portal came into effect in 2021 as a self-service system.

The IEC said the system has improved the accessibility, efficiency, and integrity of voter registration.

"This year, the portal recorded 26,743 newly registered voters, bringing the total number of registered voters to 27,718,204.

"Young voters remain a key focus, with 7,756,911 registered, highlighting the need for intensified mobilisation efforts ahead of the elections," the IEC said.

Acting Chief Electoral Officer George Mahlangu said the commission is focusing on empowering all voters, particularly the youth, to participate in South Africa’s democratic processes.
