Illegal mining turf war suspected in deadly Cleveland shooting

JOHANNESBURG - Police suspect illegal mining turf wars may be behind the deadly Cleveland, Johannesburg mass shooting.

Twelve people were shot dead, and ten others were wounded at Jumpers Informal Settlement. A manhunt is now under way for more than ten gunmen who arrived in a white Toyota Quantum and opened fire on residents.

The shooting happened moments before 9pm. Ten other people were left injured. The motive for the brazen shooting is unknown, but fingers are pointing towards illegal mining turf wars.

Tommy Mthombeni, SAPS Gauteng Provincial Commissioner said: "At this stage, we could not determine what the motive is. As you know, this area is just adjacent to the illegal mining area. So we are having those suspicions, but one can term this incident to be insane, to be heartless, and to a certain extent barbaric.”

Police have launched a manhunt for the culprits.
