Impeachment committee to oppose Ramaphosa interdict application

CAPE TOWN - Parliament's Impeachment Committee for the Section 89 enquiry has resolved to oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa's urgent application for an interdict to halt its proceedings.

The 31-member Committee consulted an independent legal team, which included Advocate William Mokhare SC.

Mokhare said lawmakers must follow the Constitutional Court’s order and get to work without delay.

He said that opposing the interdict will show the court the inquiry will be fair.

Ramaphosa has filed an urgent application in the Western Cape High Court to stop the Committee’s work until the report of the Section 89 Independent Panel is reviewed.

He argues the panel exceeded its mandate and that its findings are based on hearsay rather than fact.
