Impeachment committee to receive legal briefing

CAPE TOWN - The Section 89 Impeachment Committee will receive a briefing on Thursday on President Cyril Ramaphosa's legal bid to halt its proceedings.

The President has approached the Cape Town High Court seeking an urgent interdict while he challenges the Section 89 report.

Ramaphosa argued that allowing the inquiry to proceed before the review is heard could cause irreparable harm.

The committee will be briefed on the legal implications of the court challenge and what it means for the inquiry going forward.

Meanwhile, Action SA has sent a letter to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza to oppose Ramaphosa's attempt to stop the Section 89 Impeachment Committee.

The party said the President is trying to keep parliament from doing its Constitutional duties. ActionSA Impeachment Committee Member, Lerato Ngobeni, is questioning the timing of the President's legal action.
