PRETORIA – An informant is demanding protection guarantees from the Madlanga Commission after his identity was disclosed during Monday’s public hearings.
The witness, who is demanding a response from the Commission by 1pm on Tuesday, is concerned that the disclosure has put him and others involved in intelligence operations at risk.
He has confirmed sharing sensitive information with the Political Killings Task Team linking alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala to serious criminal activities.
Through his lawyer, he wrote to the Commission, saying the disclosure exposed him and others involved in intelligence operations.
On Monday, during hearings led by advocate Matthew Chaskalson, WhatsApp logs and documents were read into the record identifying the informant as an intermediary who allegedly sent sensitive information to taxi boss Bafana Sindane.
“Our client further instructs us that, following the evidence led before the Commission, he became aware of threats directed at him or persons associated with him,” his lawyers said in a letter to the Commission.
