Infrastructure damages could reach R4bn - Limpopo Premier

GIYANI - Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba says the cost of infrastructure damage resulting from the severe weather and flooding could reach up to R4 billion.

But Ramathuba says this amount may change because the figure remains provisional, as officials have not yet accessed certain areas to conduct full assessments.

This is due to the difficulty of access and persistent rain.

Limpopo has been turned upside down after heavy rains ravaged the province.

Roads have been swept away, bridges are no longer standing, and communities have been cut off from their economic lifelines and daily routines.

In the midst of the havoc, nine people lost their lives, with seven from December and two since 1 January.

Among those who died was a five-year-old whose parents could not save him.

Other infrastructure damages were water and electricity, hospital facilities, schools, and 439 roads.

The Premier says they can not rule out the possibility of uncovering the ‘worst outcome’ as assessments continue.
