Job seekers warned about online scams

JOHANNESBURG - Job seekers are being advised to beware of online scams that lead to human trafficking.

It comes in the wake of an Interpol report on human trafficking and the globalisation of scam centres.

Data shows that as of March this year, victims from 66 countries have been trafficked into online scam centres.

The majority end up in Southeast Asia, where they are held against their will and coerced into committing fraud.

But centres are now popping up in the Middle East and West Africa.

"In South Africa, we see five ways in which traffickers lure in their victims. The number one way is through fake job offers. Only at number five comes abduction," said Tershia de Klerk from the National Freedom Network.

"Once you are in their clutches, they remove your identification documents."
