Joburg Crisis Alliance threatens legal action over ongoing water crisis

JOHANNESBURG - The Joburg Crisis Alliance is threatening legal action against the City of Johannesburg for failing to ensure a reliable water supply for residents.

The alliance has criticised city authorities for what it says is a lack of urgency in addressing the ongoing water crisis, with communities across Johannesburg continuing to experience water shortages.

Yunus Chamda of the Joburg Crisis Alliance says conflicting messages from Johannesburg Water and residents' experiences are fuelling frustration and anger.

“I think that the mixed signals that we get from Joburg Water and what we pick up from the ground from communities doesn't connect. And I think it's that that raises the temperature, makes people angry because they hear one message, but the reality on the ground is completely different, and they simply don't know what to expect.”

Chamda says the alliance is now considering possible legal avenues to hold the city accountable.

He also pointed to a protest held outside the council chambers on 1 November 2025, when the alliance presented 10 demands calling for urgent intervention in the water crisis.

However, he says the issue received attention for only a few weeks before once again slipping off the city's agenda.

“Because this matter has not received the attention that it deserves, here we are again. You know, across the city of Joburg, people don't have water.”

Meanwhile, Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero is expected to hold a media briefing on Monday to address the city's ongoing water crisis, as pressure mounts on the municipality to provide lasting solutions.
