Joburg inner-city power outages leave thousands without water

JOHANNESBURG - The Johannesburg Property Owners and Managers Association is calling on the City of Joburg and City Power to address repeated power outages in the inner city.

The association alongside the Joburg Crisis Alliance is warning that the issue doesn't just affect homes, but businesses, workers, informal traders, property owners and livelihoods.

Regular fires at the Central Substation are largely responsible for extended outages.

Johannesburg Property Owners and Managers Association’s Angela Rivers said more needs to be done.

“So this is the third fire actually at central substation in the last couple of months and at the moment we are experiencing more days without electricity than with electricity and what a lot of people don't understand especially in the inner city is a lot of high-rise buildings need electricity in order to even get water into the building.

“The water pressure is very low in the inner city so we need electricity to pump the water to the roof so a lot of our tenants and I can say from my what's been reported to me is over 6,000 residential units are without electricity and therefore a lot of them are without water as well."
