Joburg officials under fire over hefty salaries

JOHANNESBURG - There are increasing calls for Johannesburg's municipal entity executives to justify their high salaries, given the city's state of decay.

Community action network JoburgCan has welcomed the scrutiny into executive packages, which run into the millions in some cases.

An analysis of the City of Joburg's own budget data reveals soaring salary increases across many municipal entities, despite deteriorating services and a widening revenue shortfall.

Combined, the city pays almost a whopping R40-million in CEO salaries.

"Both the AG and Treasury have consistently raised alarm bells about the spending on salaries. Not only for entities but for managers across the board," said Julia Fish from JoburgCan.

"That's why we are struggling with the dropping revenue rates. We should be collecting around 94 percent. Until recently, it's been at the 82 percent mark."
