Joshlin kidnapping trial | Defence argues for clients' freedom

SALDANHA BAY - Defence lawyers are making their closing arguments in the Joshlin Smith kidnapping trial.

Judge Nathan Erasmus is expected to hand down judgment on Friday in the case of Joshlin's mother Kelly Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis and friend Steveno van Rhyn.

The three have been on trial on kidnapping and human trafficking charges and have pleaded not guilty.

Van Rhyn's lawyer Advocate Nobahle Mkabayi said the state had two versions of what happened to the little girl.

"I submit to this court that the state has failed dismally to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt," she said.
