CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape High Court has reserved judgment in President Cyril Ramaphosa's urgent application to halt Parliament's Section 89 impeachment process.
Ramaphosa wants the impeachment committee's work suspended while he challenges the Section 89 independent panel's report into the Phala Phala scandal.
The application was heard in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday, opposition parties described the application as a delay tactic, arguing that it is intended to avoid accountability rather than protect the Presidency.
Ramaphosa's legal team, however, argued that allowing the impeachment process to continue before the review application is heard would be unfair and could cause unnecessary reputational harm to a sitting president.
Speaking outside court, Section 89 impeachment committee chairperson Makashule Gana said the committee's preparatory work, including the appointment of an evidence leader and the preparation of witnesses, would continue.
"We are not going to stop until the court has made a determination. The work continues," Gana said.
